Henry Thomas Oates, 73, died on Friday at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Oak Forest Church of Christ, 2705 North Park Drive, with Robert Goff and Lennie Reagan officiating.
Mr. Oates was born in Duplin County on March 28, 1933 to the late Livie and Martha Faison Oates. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Gracie Faison Oates; three daughters, Geneva Oates of East Chicago, Ind., Doretha Davis of Loganville, Ga., and Patricia Ann Knowles of New Haven, Conn.; one step-daughter, Mary Faison of Norwich, Conn.; five sons, Kennedy Lee Oates and wife Yvette of Budapest, Hungary, Kelvin Lee Oates and wife, Phyllis, of Jonesboro, Ga., Linwood C. Oates of Goldsboro, Connell Oates and wife, Mae of New York, N.Y. and Jimmy Oates and wife, Diane of Los Angeles, Calif.; three stepsons, David Jerome Faison of Minneapolis, Minn., Abdul-Jameel Taajwar and wife, Betty of Gary, Ind., and Major Lee Faison of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, the Reverend Elizabeth Hurley of Norwich, Conn., and Roszell McLamb of Mt. Olive; one brother, Robert Lee Oates of Goldsboro and a host grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Oates was preceded in death by two daughters, Martha and Betty Jean Oates.
The viewing will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at 510 Cardinal Drive.
