Donald Wood Sutton, 78, Rodell Barrow Road, died Wednesday, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Mr. Sutton was born in Lenoir County to the late Leslie and Rachel Sutton. He was a member of Free Gospel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Sutton was self-employed, operating Sutton's Rest Home and Sutton's Dixie Chemical Warehouse for many years. He was a charter member and former Fire Chief of East Wayne VFD and was currently serving as President of the fire department.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at Free Gospel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Gerald Holloman, the Rev. Reynolds Smith and the Rev. Willard Hardison officiating. Interment will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Fairview Cemetery, La Grange.
Mr. Sutton is survived by his wife of sixty years, Margaret Barrow Sutton; a daughter, Donna S. Uzzell and husband, Rayburn; two sons, Gary Sutton and wife, Diane, Mike Sutton and wife, Nannette; five grandchildren, Prentice Uzzell and wife, Dianne, Julie Daniels and husband, Eddie, Kristen Tingen and husband, Adam, Garrett Sutton and friend, Cinnamon Powell, and Megan Sutton; eight great-grandchildren, Lee and Jacob Daniels, Emily and Will Uzzell, Noah, Jonah and Jarrett Tingen and Cori Sutton. Mr. Sutton was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Nicole Daniels; a sister, Shirley Evans; and seven brothers, Cecil, Russell, Laurice, Norwood, Lionel, Carey and Desmond Sutton; and an aunt, Mary E. Sutton.
The family will receive friends Thursday following the service and at other times at the home. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Free Gospel PFWB Church, 145 Free Gospel Road, Snow Hill, 28580 or the American Cancer Society, 930B Wellness Drive, Greenville, 27834. The family is being served by Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
