George Frederick Lemke Jr., 204 Earl Dr., died Monday at his home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Norris, O.S.F.S., presiding. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
A resident of Goldsboro since 1987, Mr. Lemke was born Dec. 17, 1917, in Annapolis, Md., to Ruth Marie and George Frederick Lemke Sr. He served in the Navy prior to World War II.
Later, he was employed by the National Aeronautical and Space Administration in Hampton, Va., as an engineering technician in the experimental machine shop until his retirement in 1974. As an engineering technician, he contributed to the development of different space programs. Also, while employed at NASA, he completed one of the first emergency medical technician courses offered, and served as an EMT for NASA employees.
He was an avid gardener, completing the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service of Wayne County's Master Gardener program in 1990. Mr. Lemke was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his son, William D. Lemke and family of Gloucester, Va.; daughter, Kathleen Lemke Haun and family of Goldsboro; his foster son, William W. Scott and family of Hampton; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, family and friends. Also surviving are special caregivers, Carol Best and Loroyce Marlowe.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Lemke was preceded in death by his wife, Mary T. Lemke; his brother, Albert E. Lemke; and his sister, Francis Christine May.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 2402 Wayne Memorial Dr., Goldsboro, 27534.
A rosary will be recited Friday at 6 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and following the rosary, the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
