GENE E. KING

May 21, 1940-Sept. 13, 2006

WENDELL -- Gene Elwood King, 66, Martin Pond Road, died Wednesday at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

He was born May 21, 1940 to the late Herman and Flossie Jackson King. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, H.W. King and Clayton King and sister, Joyce Melson.

Gene was a very well-liked person who never met a stranger and always wanted to help you. He had a gift of fixing motors, although he never was formally taught and was a gifted equipment operator.

He loved cooking pigs and his claim to fame was Pops Barbecue Sauce. Being a shrewd businessman, he could talk the price down and walk away leaving you thinking that's what you wanted for it anyway. He loved fishing and growing vegetables in his garden and had his own special way of showing his family he loved them.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frank Purvis officiating. Burial will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

Gene is survived by his wife, Dora Thornton King; sons Mark King and wife, Cheryl, of Wendell, David King and wife, Tammy, of Raleigh, Brian King and wife, Tracy, of Knightdale; five grandchildren, Stefan King, Brooke King, Evan King, Piper King and Scout King; sisters, Pat Brown and husband, Bill, of Clayton, Daisy Westbrook and husband, Carl Lee, of Mount Olive; one brother, Jackie King and wife, Liz, of Faison; and a large group of nieces, nephews and their families.

Family members will greet friends immediately following the committal service at Wayne Memorial Park.

We'll miss you, Gene. "To the left, to the right." "Do what?!"
