GLADYS MITCHELL

Gladys Mercer Mitchell, 89, died Tuesday at the Brian Center in Spruce Pine following an extended period of declining health.
Mrs. Mitchell resided in Goldsboro prior to relocating to western North Carolina. She was a member of Eden Christian Church in the Shine Community of Greene County and was the widow of Norman C. Mitchell.
A graveside service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the Mewborn Family Cemetery in Greene County. The Rev. Jack Mays and the Rev. Gerald Hollomon will officiate.
Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her sons and daughters, Jack Donald Mercer, and his wife, Brenda, of Kinston; Maxine Harris and her husband, Jimmy, of Snow Hill; Norma Rae Hammond and her husband, Fred, of Burnsville; Peggy Goode Ludwig and her husband, Jack, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Dee Hitchcock and her husband, Bob, of Naples, Fla., and JoAnne Mitchell of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Louise Owens of Kinston and Catherine Basnight of Elizabeth City; a brother, Frederick Mercer of Boston, Mass; and 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service in Snow Hill, and other times at the home of Jimmy and Maxine Harris, 270 Mitchell Road, Snow Hill.
