ARLEY E. McCARTER

Arley Elbert McCarter, 74, of 2876 US Hwy. 117, Dudley, died early Sunday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Roney and Mae White McCarter and a 1951 graduate of Goldsboro High School. He was married to Pat Shumate Faulk McCarter and the late Dorothy Tyndall Morgan McCarter. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he was retired assistant chief with the Goldsboro Fire Department with over 35 years of fire service and was presently employed with Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home & Crematory. A dedicated member of Goldsboro Worship Center (formerly the Church of God on Clingman Street), he was a member of the Sanctuary Sunday School Class and served on the church council. A member and past president of the Goldsboro Firemen's Credit Union, he also sang with the Third Century Singers, serving two terms as president, and was an original member of the Masters Trio. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Goldsboro Worship Center, with Pastor Jerry Andrews and Pastor Joseph Leonard officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park with fire department honors provided by the Goldsboro Fire Department Honor Guard.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Mark Horne McCarter and wife Cathy of Albany, Ga.; two grandsons, Marcus Horne McCarter Jr. and Zachery Todd Horne McCarter of Albany, Ga.; a sister, Ruth McCarter Hoffman of Goldsboro; stepchildren, William Michael Morgan and wife Jacque of Columbia, S.C., Suzanne and Gary Brown of Mount Olive, Ven and Ashley Faulk and Philip Faulk, all of Dudley; step-grandchildren, Chad and Crystal Edwards of Albany, Ga., Savanna Suzanne Brown, Madison Snow Brown and Wilson James Brown of Mount Olive, Patricia Diane Faulk, Emma Ashley Faulk, James Venable Faulk III, Julia Helene Faulk and Susannah Faith Faulk of Dudley; mother-in-law, Mae W. Shumate of Dudley; special family, Mary, Craig, Chris and Tom Stevens, all of Goldsboro.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby W. McCarter and Sam White; sisters, Sadie McCarter Southerland and Virginia "Jink" McCarter McDonald; and his stepmother, Blonde Pate McCarter.
Family members will greet friends Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and other times at the home.
