Robert Lloyd "Bobby" Gurley Jr., 47, died Monday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Gurley was born in Wayne County to R.L. Gurley and Phyllis Banks Gurley of Goldsboro. He attended Rosewood High School and was the first Wayne County student to graduate in Special Education. He was a local, regional and state Gold Medalist and was the first recipient of the Wayne County Special Olympics Athlete of the Year award.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with Bishop Gary Corbett presiding. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Patricia Ann Gurley McFatter and husband Terry of Brandon, Fla., Cathy Gurley Cogdell and husband Jared of Goldsboro; his nieces and nephews, Shelley McFatter, Kimberly McFatter, Travis Davis, Brandon Davis, and Celeste Davis; special friends, Jimmie Gaukler and Donna May.
He was preceded in death by a special friend, Beverly Rafferty.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the Special Olympics of Wayne County, 102 Commonsgate Drive, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 2:00 - 3:15 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and other times at the home of his parents, 2430 US 70 West, Goldsboro.
