Jethro Oates died Friday.

Mr. Oates was born in Sampson County on Nov, 30, 1917, to John Martin Oates Sr. and Blanche Sutton Oates.

Following graduation from Piney Grove High School, he moved to Detroit, Mich., in 1935. He served in the European and Pacific theaters during World War II. After the war, he was employed by Wayne Creamery, Nabisco, and Nationwide Insurance Co., until retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Katherine Galetto Oates. They were married on July 19, 1941, at St. Mary of Redford Catholic Church in Detroit, Mich. He is also survived by one daughter, Carol Oates Ebel; and four sons, William P., John Martin III, Ronald Allan, and Gary Michael Oates; a brother, Hugh F. Oates Sr.; sisters, Serena Oates, Hilda O. Jones, Miriam O. Grimes, and Jean O. Westbrook, all of Mount Olive; eight grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; brothers, Ronald, Ralph, John Martin Jr. (Jack), George Edward, and Charles Rudolph Oates.

A memorial service will be held at the Oates Cemetery, Hwy. 50 in Sampson County, at a later date. Interment will be in Fort Custer Memorial Park, Battle Creek, Mich.
