DR. BEN HOUSTON
Died Sept. 27, 2005
Dr. Benjamin Herriot Houston III, 81, of Goldsboro, died Tuesday of complications from pneumonia.
He was the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Benjamin Houston of Smithfield. He graduated from Clinton High School and attended Duke University before serving in he U.S. Army during World War II. Dr. Houston completed his undergraduate work at Wofford College in South Carolina, and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia Dental School in 1952. He practiced dentistry in Goldsboro for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1992.
Dr. Houston was a member of the American Society of Dentistry for Children, and was past president of the Wayne County Dental Society and the Demeritt Pedodontic Study Club. He was a past board member of Wayne Community College, St. Paul United Methodist Church, Goldsboro Kiwanis Club, Goldsboro Country Club, Goldsboro Rod and Gun Club, and the Wayne County Republican Party. His hobbies were hunting, tennis, fishing and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Davis Houston; daughters, Betsy Houston of Chapel Hill, Dr. Bennett Houston Lockamy of Hillsborough, and Sally Houston Sullivan of Lynchburg, Va.; and brother, Dr. Robert J. Houston of Columbus, Ohio.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, at 3 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, or to the Wayne Community College Foundation, to his designated Dental Scholarship Fund.
