Henry Gilmer Bateman, 88, of 976 Emmaus Church Road, died Wednesday at Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation Center of MountOlive.
The funeral will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Mount Olive, where he was a member, with the Reverends Doug Bartlett and Jimmy Swinson officiating. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.
Mr. Bateman was born in Plymouth, N.C., to the late Ben Frank and Marina Griffin Bateman. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Edna Earl Bass Bateman, and one brother and four sisters. A retired barber and a veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945. He was stationed in the Philippine Islands and New Guinea and received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
He is survived by his wife, Grace M. Bateman; two sons, Haywood Gilmer Bateman of Sandy Springs, S.C., and Benny Frank Bateman of New Bern; one daughter, Martha Kay Bateman Mantei of Columbia, S.C.; a stepson, Kent Davis of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Patsy Joyner of Mount Olive, Ann Simmons of Bell Glade, Fla.; one brother, Johnny Bateman of Arvonia, Va.; one sister, Marie Frances Davenport of Bunn; and eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family will be receive friends at the church immediately following the funeral, and at other times at the home.
