RALEIGH -- Alfred William "Fred" Houtz Jr., 73, of Raleigh, North Carolina, formerly of Richmond, Virginia, passed away peacefully Sunday, surrounded by his family, at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, S.C.
He was born in Elizabeth City, N.C., to the late Alfred William Houtz Sr. and Margaret Sawyer Houtz. After serving from 1950-1954 in the United States Air Force, he received a bachelor's degree in mechanical and industrial engineering from NC State University. He was elected student body president in 1957, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
He retired as director of engineering from Lucent Technologies in Richmond, Virginia, in 1989. he was considered an expert in the field of printed circuits. During retirement, he and Pat spent much of their time at their favorite place, their beach home, and enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patricia Hines Houtz of Raleigh, N.C.; one son, Alfred William Houtz III, and wife, Cindi, of Richmond, Va.; his daughters, Margot Houtz Murphy and husband David and Michelle Houtz Kindsvatter and husband Rob, all of Raleigh, N.C.
He will be missed by his six loving grandchildren, Sydney and Will Houtz, Jacob and Kaitlin Murphy, Emma and Lily Kindsvatter.
Fred is also survived by two brothers, Heywood Houtz and wife Patsy of Elizabeth City and David Houtz of Nags Head.
The family will receive friends Wednesday (today) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bryan Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh.
A memorial service celebrating Fred's life will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at Bryan-Lee.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Lung Association, American Heart Association, or the charity of one's choice.
