WILLIE KORNEGAY

PRINCETON -- William Franklin "Willie" Kornegay, 86, died Thursday morning in the Brian Center of Wilson.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Princeton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bobby Fletcher, the Rev. Lewis Baker and Mrs. Barbara Hinton officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in Progressive Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Mr. Kornegay was born in Johnston County, to the late James Elbert and Luna Victoria Gurley Kornegay. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Glider Infantry with the 101st Airborne, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge serving in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. After his military career, he farmed for many years. He also worked with the Johnston-Lee Community Action, the Town of Smithfield and HAAP of Johnston County as a cost estimator and carpenter until his eyesight limited his mobility. All his life he kept a garden, and even when he could no longer see, he tended to his vegetable until he was physically unable.
Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Johnson Kornegay; one son, Mac Kornegay, and his wife, Deborah, of Princeton; and two sisters, Edith K. Whitley and Barbara Creech of Smith-field.
The family will receive friends on Friday night from 7 until 8 p.m. at the Parrish Funeral Home in Princeton.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Princeton United Methodist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 116, Princeton, NC 27569.
