GARY E. ZIMMERMAN
Gary Earl Zimmerman, Ph.D., of 1808 East Holly Street died May 15, 2005, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was 65.
He was born in Fond du Lac, Wisc., in on Aug. 23, 1939, to the late Earl Zimmerman and Doris Brunkhorst Zimmerman. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor of science degree in psychology and a master of science degree in human development. He also received a master's degree in educational psychology from the University of Ottawa, Canada, a Certificate in school psychology from State University of New York, and a doctor's degree in psychology from Sussex College of Technology, England.
He worked with Sandhills Mental Health Center in Richmond County and also had a private practice in Rockingham before coming to Goldsboro in 1978. He was a psychologist with the Wayne County Public School System from 1978 until he retired in 1986.
He was a member of Phi Delta Kapa, was a charter member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, and also was a member of the American Personnel and Guidance Association and the National Association of School Psychologist.
During his career, he taught a number of college courses, conducted clinical workshops and traveled to several foreign countries.
Dr. Zimmerman was a member of Gold Mason #634, Gold York Rite Bodies, and Sudan Temple Shiners and Elks Lodge # 139, was a Drug Awareness chairman from 1985 to 1990, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 2615. He served on the Political Action Committee and received an award in 1990.
He was recognized by the Wayne County Mental Health Association for "Outstanding Service to the Drug Awareness Program from 1988 until 1990," having served as chairman of the program for six years.
Dr. Zimmerman was a Life Sponsor of Knights Templer Eye Foundation Inc. and was named a Lifetime Member of MENSA on March 1, 1978. Dr. Zimmerman was a Life Member of Wisconsin Alumni Association. He wrote and had published several books including, "Images of Feeling Human" that was published and copyrighted in September, 1980. He dedicated this book to Wayne County Schools, Martha Zimmerman and Darrell Zimmerman, and donated proceeds to Oxford Orphanage of North Carolina. His book reviews appeared in a number of publications, including the News-Argus.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Jane Flinn Zimmerman, and is survived by his brother, Darrell Zimmerman of Washington, D.C.; and a special friend, Yvonne Lancaster, and her fiancé, Ronnie Lee, of Goldsboro.
Private services will be held.
