EZRA "GROUCHO" BREWER

EZRA 'GROUCHO' BREWER

Ezra Wallace "Groucho" Brewer, 93, was called by God to his Heavenly home on Wednesday, March 9, 2004, to join his wife of sixty-four years, Martha Magdalene Futrell Brewer, who preceded him in death on February 25, 2001.

Ezra, being the middle child, was born on October 22, 1911, in Lasker, North Carolina in Northampton County into a family of eight siblings: Willie, Grady, Fred, Hubert, Janice, Rennie and Odie who have all preceded him in death; as well as his parents, Frank Marion and Carrie Louise Vaughn Brewer.

In 1961, Norwood Gainey Sr., Reuben Grant and Ezra Brewer began the Mar Mac Volunteer Fire Department, operating out of the Gainey Garage with a barrel of water on the back of a pick-up truck. He served with the Mar Mac Volunteer Fire Department for twenty-eight years.

Ezra was a farmer, logger, mechanic and an employee for the City of Goldsboro for many years, where he was named "Employee of the Year in 1977." His claim to fame was that he could fix anything except a broken heart.

Edie Kriger and Ezra donated the first monies for the brick to build Brogden United Methodist Church. He was a member of Mays Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Dudley, North Carolina.

Ezra liked to help others and to share the fruits of his labor with all of his friends.

Ezra is survived by his devoted and beloved daughter, Daphene King Overman, and her husband, Robert, of Powell, Tennessee and Dudley, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Cheryl Ann Prose and husband, Jim of Knoxville, Tennessee and John Wallace Bowden and wife, Julie of Maryville, Tennessee; two great-grandchildren, Sara Ann Bowden and Seth Wallace Bowden of Maryville, Tennessee; one sister, Clifford Collier of Roanoke Rapids; and two sisters-in-law, Janie Newton of Riverside, CT, and Marie Futrell of Birmingham, Alabama.

The family will be receiving friends on Saturday, March 12, 2005, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the home, 1233 Old Grantham Rd., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.

Funeral services will be held at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2005, with the Reverends Frank Flowers and Allen Stanley officiating. Entombment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley, North Carolina.

The Mar Mac Volunteer Fire Department Honor Guard will be providing fire department honors for Ezra at the funeral and graveside services.

Ezra fought a good fight, finished his course and was ready to be called home to join his family and friends who had gone on to meet the Lord and he will be waiting for his remaining friends and family to join him in Glory, for Eternity.

In lieu of flowers, you may make your remembrance to Mar Mac Volunteer Fire Dept., 583 Old Grantham Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530; or the Mays Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, 3831 US 117 Alt., Dudley, N.C., 28333.
