IRENE BEST ASKEW

Irene Best Askew, 103, of the Rosewood Community, died Friday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

A native of Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late George R. Best and Addie Blackman Best, and was the widow of Alvin R. Askew. Mrs. Askew was a member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Pine Forest United Methodist Church with the Rev. Billy Olsen officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Askew is survived by her son, George A. Askew and wife, Charlotte, of Evergreen, Ala.; her daughters, Hilda A. Witherington and husband, Wilba, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Gretchen A. Evans and husband, Percy, of Las Vegas, Nev.; her son-in-law, Leslie E. Thompson of Goldsboro; her daughter-in-law, Jean S. Askew of Goldsboro; her sisters-in-law, Grace A. Smith, Ruth A. Farabough, Lola Askew, Gracie Askew and Alease Askew, and her special friends, Lee and Ann Abel; 14 grandchildren, Patsy T. Pellet, Larry Thompson, Kim T. Farmer, Eddie Thompson, Teresa A. Powell, Debbie A. Carswell, Susan A. Whitley, Paul Askew, Joey Evans, Donna Askew, Georgia A. O'Connor, Steve Witherington, Kathy Witherington and Danny Witherington; 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Edna A. Thompson, her son Melvin Askew, and her siblings Gilbert Best, Kirby Best, Penny B. Holmes, Anna B. Stevens, Lafayette Best, Tom Best, Ruth B. Bordeaux and Andrew Best.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pine Forest United Methodist Church, 867 Hwy. 581 South, Goldsboro, NC 27530.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at her home, 647 Hwy. 581 North, Goldsboro.
