JAMES L. COOMBS
James Lloyd Coombs, 88, of 345 W. Hill St. died Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Born in Onslow County to the late Lloyd Z. and Kate Farrior Coombs, he was a retired carpenter and a devoted member of the Harmony Masonic Lodge in Pikeville for over 50 years.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Coombs served during World War II with Battery A, 318th Artillery Battalion and received the American Theater Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with one bronze service star, Philippine Liberation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
A Masonic graveside service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Coombs is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ada Hamilton Edmundson Coombs; a son and daughter-in-law, James Keith and Lib Coombs of Goldsboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Don Bryan of Shines Crossroads; two brothers, Wilbur Coombs of Conway, S.C., R.E. Coombs of Townville, S.C.; two sisters, Louise Stafford of Goldsboro, Lena Fedo of Port John, Fla.; two grandchildren, Danielle and Natalie Bryan of Shines Crossroads.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the North Carolina Masonic Home for Children, 600 College St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.
The family is being served by Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.
