SOLLY SAULS
Solly Sauls, 83, died Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory. The Rev. Willard Hardison will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Sauls was born in Wayne County on March 8, 1921, to the late George and Leora Hill Sauls. He attended Saulston and New Hope schools, Wayne Community College, Wilson County Technical Institute and the Auto Air Technical School, Rock Island, Ill. A certified automotive technician, he owned and operated Sauls Wheel Alignment and Motor Service for 41 years.
He was a member of the Goldsboro Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as trustee, deacon and Sunday school superintendent.
Mr. Sauls entered the United States Army on Oct. 21, 1942, at Fort Bragg. He completed basic training at Camp Campbell, Ky., and was assigned as a bulldozer operator with the 12th Armored Division and the 119th Armored Engineer Battalion. He served in the Rhineland and Central European Campaign from 1944 until 1945. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. His other service medals included the American Service Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Driver's Badge and the Rifle M-1 Expert Badge.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Malissa Braswell Sauls; one son, Michael G. Sauls and wife, Sherry, of Goldsboro; two daughters, Ann S. Gooding and husband, Roger, of Goldsboro and Gayle S. Sutton and husband, Gary, of Goldsboro; one brother, Wilson Sauls and wife, Brenda, of Goldsboro; one sister, Rosa Lee Frazier of LaGrange; seven grandchildren, April G. Presnell of Wilmington; Brian and Kevin Gooding of Wilmington, Travis Sutton of Raleigh, Stephen Sutton, Michael and Jacob Sauls of Goldsboro; and one great-grandchild, Dylan Gooding of Wilmington.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey L. Sauls; four sisters, Rena Mae S. Aswell; Irene S. Wells, Mary S. Tyndall and Ted Sauls; and four brothers, Lenwood Sauls, Wilbur Sauls, Jim Sauls and Lindbergh Sauls.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory, and other times at the residence at 1201 N. Berkeley Boulevard., Goldsboro.
