GEORGE ABERNETHY
MOUNT OLIVE -- George Robert Abernethy Jr., 83, of 1556 White Flash Road, died Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Alum Springs Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. James Elwood Oliver officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in Oak Ridge Memorial Park near Pink Hill.
Mr. Abernethy, a native of Charlotte, was the son of the late George Robert Abernethy Sr. and Grace Phillips Abernethy. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the South Pacific Theater during World War II. He retired as a district manager with International Harvester Co.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Kornegay Abernethy of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Yvonne Abernethy of Aiken, S.C., and Richard and Cherie Abernethy of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Garrett Abernethy, Erin Abernethy, Scott Abernethy and Jeff Abernethy; a sister, Vernell A. Stevens of Warsaw; and a brother, Clarence Abernethy of Houston, Texas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Sarah, Lena and Mildred.
The Abernethy family received friends at Tyndall Funeral Home on Saturday evening and other times at the residence.
