LAGRANGE -- Dr. Dan Mitchell Pearce, 74, of LaGrange, died Tuesday, October 5, 2004.

Dan was born in Columbus County to the late Charles and Annie Lou Johnson Pearce and was married to the late Jean Best Pearce.

He is survived by two sons, Jason Claude Pearce of Washington, D.C., and Kimber Charles Pearce and fiancee/caregiver, Robbie L. Rogers of Wilmington; and brother, Dr. Larry Pearce of Winston-Salem.

Dan served in the US Air Force and graduated from Greensboro College with a Degree in Art. He later received a Master's Degree in Art Education from UNC-Greensboro along with an Ed.D. in Art Education from the George Washington University.

Dan taught high school art in Winston-Salem for several years. He served on the faculty of Elizabeth City State University for thirty five years as an Art Professor, Chairman of the Art Department and as the Associate Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs. ECSU awarded him the honor of Professor Emeritus following his retirement.

Dan was active in the Elizabeth City community. He served as President of the Pasquotank Arts Council along with judging numerous art exhibits. He was an accomplished portrait, still life, and landscape painter who also created sculptures and plaques.

A celebration of Dan's life will be held Saturday, October 9, 2004, at 11 a.m. from Beston United Methodist Church, of which he was a member, with Rev. T.C. West officiating.
