WAYNE D. HELMS
SELMA -- Wayne Dortch Helms, 61, of Carmill Drive, died Friday.
Born on March 13, 1943 in Johnston County, he was the son of the late Will Dortch Helms and Beulah Thorne Helms. He was a member of Pleasant Plain Free Will Baptist Church. Wayne was retired from the U.S. Army with over 20 years of service. He was a MSG in Communications-Electronics.
During his time in the Army he was awarded many medals and decorations including, National Defense, Republic of Vietnam and the Bronze Star medal. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Funeral services with full military honors will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. The Rev. Clifford B. Harwood will officiate. Burial will follow in Selma Memorial Gardens.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Ellen E. Helms of Selma; sons, Bobby Helms and his wife Anita of Clayton and Kenneth Wayne Helms and wife Sharma of Goldsboro; brothers, Harold T. Helms and Larry N. Helms, both of Selma and Randy Helms of Louisburg; grandchildren, Keaton Wayne Helms and Wil Larsen Helms, both of Goldsboro.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 4 until 6 p.m. Flowers are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1544, Smithfield, N.C. 27577 or to Pleasant Plain Free Will Baptist Church, 1991 Old Beulah Rd., Selma, N.C. 27576.
