ANNA DERBY
Anna Potter Derby, 60, formerly of Goldsboro, died Wednesday at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.
She was born Dec. 16, 1943, in Raleigh to the late Annabelle Hicks and James Harper Potter. At an early age she moved with her family to Snow Hill where she spent her childhood. She was a graduate of Salem Academy in Winston-Salem, and attended Sweet Briar College and UNC-Chapel Hill where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. In later years she acquired teacher certification from East Carolina University and taught high school English. After she and her husband moved from Goldsboro to Raleigh, she was employed for a number of years with the law firms of Kilpatrick Stockton and Hutchison & Mason. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Goldsboro.
She is survived by her husband, William Jay Derby Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Hope Derby Carmichael and Randolph H. Carmichael III of Raleigh; a son and daughter-in-law, William Jay Derby III and Susan Wall Derby of Arkadelphia, Ark.; and two grandchildren, Emma Hope Carmichael and Caroline Woods Derby.
She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Hope S. Derby and two sisters-in-law and their families, Ellen D. Best and C. Munroe Best Jr. and Susan D. Stackhouse and Wilson Stackhouse , all of Goldsboro, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Goldsboro. The family will greet friends afterward in the church fellowship hall. A private family burial will be at St. Barnabas Episcopal Cemetery in Snow Hill, N.C.
