IOLA D. ATKINSON
Iola Daughtry Atkinson, age 83, of 108 N. Martin Road, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Wayne Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness.
Born in Johnston County on November 27, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Rev. B. A. Daughtry and Geneva Thompson Daughtry and stepdaughter of Tabitha Hines Tillman Daughtry. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Elbert Atkinson; a son, David Franklin Atkinson; and a brother, the Rev. Donald Daughtry.
A Homegoing Celebration will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Goldsboro Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, 2812 McLain Street, with the Rev. Willard Hardison and the Rev. Pauline West officiating. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
Mrs. Atkinson was a lifetime faithful member of the Goldsboro Pentecostal F.W.B. Church, which was organized by her father. In 1949, he began a radio ministry and she assisted him by playing the piano and singing with a group. In October 1966, he could not continue due to declining health. Her brother, a minister, continued this ministry, with the help of his sister, for 23 years. She also served as the Goldsboro Church pianist, sang with the Goldsboro Church Trio, served as choir director, president and vice president of the Ladies Auxiliary, Sunday school teacher, and treasurer and assistant treasurer. She was the church clerk from 1952 until December of 2003.
She was a devout Christian, an humble servant, a confidant, and mentor to many through the years.
Mrs. Atkinson is survived by a nephew, Andy Daughtry of Pikeville; sisters-in-law, Janet Daughtry of Pikeville and Edna Earl Yopp and husband, Bob, of Jacksonville; a special niece, Ollie Mae Rogers of Middlesex; a foster sister, Ila Mae Corbett and husband, Thurston, of Goldsboro, and their children, Wayne and Tammie of Goldsboro and Anita Mitchell and husband, Wayne, of Princeton, all of whom loved her as a grandmother; her godchildren, Danielle and Stephen Mitchell of Princeton; and special friends, Malissa and Solly Sauls; and other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
The family received friends on Monday night from 7 until 8:30 at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro, and other times at the home.
