JOHN THORNTON
MOUNT OLIVE -- John William Thornton, 85, of 312 Corbett Hill Road, died Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Eureka Christian Church with the Rev. Frank Purvis officiating. Burial will be in Wayne Memorial Park.
Mr. Thornton was born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Ernie and Lou Britt Thornton and was married to Doris Graham Thornton of Mount Olive. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and was a self-employed barber and a retired farmer. He was a member of Grantham Grange, Woodmen of the World and Eureka Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by a son, Danny Wade Thornton.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Stanley Thornton and J. Dixon Thornton and his special friend, Tammy, all of Grantham; a daughter and son-in-law, Rose and Thomas Fowler of Grantham; one brother and sister-in-law, Earnie Talton Jr. and Tinkum Thornton of Seven Springs; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Vernel Grantham of Goldsboro and Elmer and Kyle Smith of Goldsboro; a grandson, Scotty Thornton and his wife, Wendy, of Mount Olive; a special grandson, Cary Davenport of Seven Springs; two great-grandchildren, Casey Thornton and Hope Thornton of Mount Olive.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd A. Thornton and Earl G. Thornton.
The family will greet friends Thursday from 7 until 9 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home & Crematory.
