MARJORIE CARROLL

Marjorie Mayo Carroll, 82, of 4501 Rivershyre Way, died Wednesday.

She was the daughter of Fred B. Mayo Sr. and Nona Johnson Mayo of Fremont.

She grew up during the depression and when her father died at 44, her mother had no choice but to place the three small girls in the Methodist Home for Children in Raleigh, where Marjorie lived until adulthood. Her two brothers were old enough to stay home and work. In addition to her siblings, she was proud to have many orphanage "brothers" and "sisters" to grow up with. She went on to attend Harbargers Business College and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She worked at Milton Best Insurance Company in Fremont before marrying her childhood sweetheart. She met Woodrow Wilson Carroll Sr. at the orphanage. They were best friends who grew up together, were sweethearts for ten years and were married for almost 50 years until his death in 1993. After marriage, Marjorie stayed home to be a housewife and mother to their three children. She was a member of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church.

A celebration of her life and home going will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, with Reverends Mick Bowen and Carolyn Pilgrim officiating. Burial will be in Montlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Carroll is survived by two sons, Sonny W. Carroll of Raleigh and John Marshall Carroll of Wendell; a daughter, Brenda C. Mangum of Raleigh; and four grandchildren; and two sisters, Nona Francis Hooks of Fremont and Janet Pearsall.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2004 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home of Brenda and Sammy Mangum, 4501 Rivershyre Way, Raleigh, NC.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, 714 E. Whitaker Mill Road, Raleigh, N.C., 27602; or to Manna Mission of Faith Baptist Church, 2728 Marks Creek Road, Knightdale, N.C., 27545.
