NINA M. GARNER

GREENVILLE -- Nina Lee Mewborn Garner, 89, of Greenville, North Carolina, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital. She was born October 1, 1914 at Nehucky Farm, Snow Hill Township, in Greene County, North Carolina, the fourth child of George Lemuel Mewborn and Eula Virginia Mewborn.

After graduation from Snow Hill High School in 1931, Mrs. Garner attended East Carolina Teacher's College , today, East Carolina University, and graduated in 1935 with a degree in elementary education. She taught for 35 years in the Duplin County Schools, first at Beulaville, and for 33 years at B. F. Grady School. On May 6, 1937, she married Varner Rayford Garner in Calypso, N.C., and lived with him and their family on the Garner family farm in Duplin County near Mount Olive. The Garners were long-time members of Garner's Chapel Baptist Church. Mrs. Garner was an avid reader and a talented needle artist, sharing examples of her beautiful cross-stitch work with relatives and friends.

Mrs. Garner was an active member of a number of educational, genealogical, and historical societies, including the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of American Colonists, Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, Jamestown Society, and Greenville Garden Club. After her move to Greenville, she was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

Mrs. Garner was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Varner Rayford Garner; her infant son, Dan Fields Garner; and her siblings, Dr. John Moses Mewborn, Ima Eula Mewborn, Henry Drew Mewborn, Quentin Alexander Mewborn, Marvin Bruce Mewborn, and Manora Mewborn Nunn.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Nell Dixon Garner of Greenville; her siblings, Beulah Barbara Mewborn of Snow Hill, George Lemuel Mewborn Jr. of Snow Hill, and Ailine Eloise Mewborn of Farmville; and many cherished nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2004, at Tyndall Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Olive with the Rev. J. Paul Rose presiding. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the funeral home. A private interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2004, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Greenville, with the Rev. Hugh Burlington presiding.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Garner's Chapel Baptist Church, 1365 Garner Chapel Road, Mount Olive, NC 28365; Immanuel Baptist Church, 1101 South Elm Street, Greenville, NC 27858; or the charity of one's choice.
