Derksen-Blokland
Tammy Renee Blokland and Kenneth Jay Derksen of Goldsboro exchanged vows in a double-ring ceremony June 17 at 2 p.m. at First Assembly of God, with the Rev. Ralph Painter officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Rick and Linda Blokland of Goldsboro and the granddaughter of Beatrice Joyner of Bossier City, La., the late Calvin Joyner and the late Fred and Marion Blokland Sr. of Holden, Mass.
She is a graduate of Eastern Wayne High School, Southeastern College of the Assemblies of God in Lakeland with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and East Carolina University with an English teacher certification. She is employed as an English teacher at Eastern Wayne High School.
The groom is the son of Charles and Jannette Derksen of Dayton, Ohio, and the grandson of the late John and Virginia Derksen of Dayton and the late Edward and Kunie Winhoven of Burkettsville, Ohio.
He graduated from Newton High School in Ohio and attended Morehead State University in Kentucky and Wright State University in Dayton for an electronic media/broadcasting major. He is employed as the public information officer for Wayne County Public Schools.
The bride was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents.
She wore a white satin strapless, A-line gown, with a split front edged with lace, pearls, crystal beads and iridescent sequins. Matching pearls, crystal and sequin appliqués adorned the fitted bodice and were scattered throughout the gown. The top was edged with a band of pearls, beads and sequins. Pearls, beads and sequins accented the scalloped-lace bottom, which flowed into a chapel-length train.
Her two-tiered fingertip-length veil was edged with satin ribbon and flowed from a tiara of pearls and crystals.
The bride carried a round bouquet of white and purple roses tied with white organza ribbon accented with pearls.
Donna Sue Zubek of Spring Lake served as her friend’s matron of honor, while Janell Stowe of Goldsboro, sister of the bride, was maid of honor.
Bridesmaids were Valerie Blokland of Goldsboro, sister of the bride; and Jacqueline Lollar of Waipahue, Hawaii, and Sharon Painter of Warsaw, friends of the bride.
Anthony Blair of Springfield, Ohio, served as his friend’s best man.
Groomsmen were Tike Swank of Covington, Ohio, Ronald Weaver of Vandalia, Ohio, David Zamora of Columbus, Ohio, and Clay Enloe of Goldsboro, friends of the groom.
Ushers were Michael Derksen of Columbus, nephew of the groom; Craig Derksen of Columbus and Jeffrey Derksen of Bradford, Ohio, brothers of the groom; and Ron Derksen of Dayton, cousin of the groom.
Sarah Derksen of Columbus, niece of the groom, and DeAnna Stowe of Goldsboro, niece of the bride, were flower girls. Brianna Zubek of Spring Lake, goddaughter of the bride, was ringbearer.
Honorary flower girls were Samantha Derksen of Columbus, niece of the groom, and Lauren Zubek of Spring Lake, friend of the bride.
Tammy Kennedy of Warsaw, friend of the couple, directed the wedding. Presiding at the register were Jeanette Lamb of Ontario, Canada, and Karen O’Conner of Lansdale, Pa., aunts of the bride.
Sharon Derksen of Dayton, aunt of the groom, and Lanie Derksen and Alexis Derksen of Dayton, cousins of the groom, greeted guests and distributed programs.
Special helpers were Kathleen Joyner of Bossier City, cousin of the bride, and Steve Kennedy, Isaiah Kennedy, Jonathon Painter and Sandi Lugo, friends of the couple.
A program of wedding music was provided by Ken Eubanks, pianist and organist, and Audrey Jordan, vocalist.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held at Butler Chapel. Nan Hatcher of Mount Olive, friend of the couple, served the wedding cake. Sandy Slusher and Helen Middleton of Goldsboro, friends of the couple, poured punch. Lindsey Clark, Jep Kirkland and Gail Witcher, friends of the couple, were coordinators and servers.
After a wedding trip to Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale, and a cruise to the Bahamas, the couple reside in LaGrange.
Events held before the wedding included a bridesmaids’ luncheon June 16 at Pizza Inn hosted by the bride and she prsented gifts to her attendants; a groomsmen’s luncheon June 16 at Chili’s and the groom presented gifs to his attendants; a lawn and garden shower May 27 at The Vineyard in Kinston hosted by Sharon and Jonathon Painter; a miscellaneous shower May 21 at the home of Valerie Blokland hosted by Ms. Blokland and Janell Stowe; a shower May 16 at Eastern Wayne High School hosted by Laura Peedin and Jane Johnson; a bridal shower May 16 hosted by Barb Goudy, Martha Langley, Kim Smith, Jan Metzler, Allyson Daly and Elizabeth Weathers; a miscellaneous shower May 15 at Wayne County Public Schools central office hosted by Olivia Pearce, Allison Pridgen, Donna Grady and Gene Jackson; and a lingerie shower April 14 hosted by the bridesmaids.
The groom’s parents held a rehearsal dinner June 16 at Butler Chapel Church fellowship hall.
