WILLIAM ALLEN POTTS

Died Aug. 18, 2018

William Allen Potts, 91, Mount Olive, died Aug. 18, 2018, while being cared for at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

He was the son of the late Dr. William Herbert Potts and Addie Belle Royal Potts of MountOlive.

His father later married Sophie Hargett, who quickly became an inspiration in Bill’s life.

After graduating from Mount Olive High School, he attended North Carolina State College/University, and then attended Oklahoma State University, where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

After serving in the United States Navy during World War II, Bill moved back to Mount Olive.

Following in his father’s footsteps, he practiced veterinary medicine in Mount Olive from 1954 to 1991.

Bill held many board of directors seats including Southern Bank and Trust Co., where he served as a member; Mt. Olive Pickle Co., where he served on the board and as chairman; and East Coast Federal Savings Co.’s board of directors.

Beyond his work on local boards and in veterinary medicine, some of Bill’s true passions were his family, the great outdoors and farming.

He looked forward to family time at Topsail Beach, deer hunting and fishing with his friends, duck hunting at Camp Bryan and sharing stories with friends at Mount Olive Rod and Gun Club and Neuse River Hunting Club.

If someone missed one of Bill’s stories at one of his famous fish stews, he would fill them in at the old Southern Bell Restaurant, where he cherished his time with friends over breakfast.

Bill was also a member of the Peanut Crew of First United Methodist Church.

We will remember Bill as an outdoorsman, southern gentleman, a leader in the community and as a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ann Fitzgerald Potts; daughters, Maridee Potts Clark, (Randy), Allyson Potts Campbell and Laura Potts Henderlong (Michael); six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to acknowledge Bill’s personal caregivers, Countryside Village and Kitty Askins Hospice Center, for their constant care.

Bill was member of First United Methodist Church, and it is there where his life will be celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 21. at 11 a.m. The Rev. Marti Hatch and the Rev. Michael Binger will officiate. A private interment will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mount Olive First United Methodist Church and Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
