Billy was a longtime member of Brock's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was on the board of trustees, was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and choir director, and had served in many other capacities through the years. He had been a volunteer fireman with Oak Wolfe Fire Department in years past and had just recently stepped down from serving on its board of directors. He had served for six years in the North Carolina Army National Guard. In 1970, he established Herring Plumbing and Heating which later became Herring Heating and Air, which he and his wife continued to operate until their retirement in 2006, and which is now operated by his son.
He enjoyed fishing, traveling, classic cars, and having a good laugh. He was "carried away" with his grandchildren and great-grandkids, loved his family immensely, and was dedicated to his church and serving the Lord, always taking every opportunity to tell of God's greatness and saving grace.
