BILL MASSENGILL

March 3, 1934-Oct. 12, 2017

Jesse William "Bill" Massengill, 83, passed away early on Thursday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Bill was born in Wayne County on March 3, 1934, to the late Claudie Andrew Massengill and Mittie Bell Lambert Massengill. He opened his first certified public accountant office in the Hollowell Building of Goldsboro on Nov. 1, 1963, and later became a senior partner with Massengill, Best, Markham, Mitchell, and Stroud before his retirement in 1999. Following his retirement, Bill continued as an independent CPA until 2016.

Bill was a longtime member of Providence United Methodist Church and served as the church treasurer for over 20 years. He lived a life of dedication to his family and friends, and to his community. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

A service to celebrate Bill's life will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary of Providence United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Huskins officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in the fellowship hall and at other times in his home.

Bill is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Peggy Matthews Massengill; son, William "Mark" Massengill and wife, Leigh Ann Gurley Massengill, of Fuquay-Varina; grandchildren, Brooke Suzanne Massengill Barnes and husband, Bradley, of Mills River, and Ashleigh Marie Massengill Smith and husband, Jonathan, of Winston-Salem; great-grandchildren, Carleigh Elizabeth Smith, Bethany Claire Smith, Alyvia Carroline Barnes, Evelynn Joy Barnes, Levi Silas Barnes, Ezra James Barnes, and Annamarie Faith Barnes; and his sister, Mary Lou Gray of Goldsboro.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Lessie Martin, Marvin Massengill, Needham Massengill, Ernest Massengill, Dorothy Shaver, Janet Pearsall, Claudie Massengill, and Carl Massengill.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Providence United Methodist Church, 202 Providence Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530 or to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
