Joseph C. "Joe" Cox, 95, died Monday night at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Cyrus E. Cox and Rebecca Noble Cox, and husband of the late Merlene Graham Cox.

Joe was a member of Eureka Christian Church, and was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II.

He was a charter member of Jordan's Chapel Volunteer Fire Department, and at one time, was the oldest active volunteer fireman in North Carolina.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Eureka Christian Church, with the Rev. Frank Purvis officiating. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Newton Grove.

The family will greet friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

He is survived by his daughters, Janice Cox Harrell and husband, Selby, and Brenda Cox Williams and husband, Edward; four grandchildren, Scott Williams and wife, Stephanie, Kelly W. Hughes and husband, Michael, Brian Harrell and wife, April, and Jamie Harrell; and seven great-grandchildren, Mckalyn Hughes, Jayda Harrell, Aubrey Hughes, Lakelyn Aman, Peyton Harrell, Grayson Williams and Anniston Williams.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Eureka Christian Church, 2036 Dobbersville Road, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365, or Jordan's Chapel Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Scott Pfennig, 1901 Raynor Mill Road, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365.
