Dr. Arthur Ross Wilson Jr. died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
Ross was born in Hartford, Conn., on Aug. 2, 1948, to Viva Barton and Arthur Ross Wilson. He grew up in West Hartford, Conn., and enjoyed summers in Ocean Park, Maine.
Ross graduated from Conard High School in West Hartford, Denison University in Granville, Ohio and Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa. He completed his residency training in otolaryngology at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Upon moving to Goldsboro in 1978, Ross started his ENT practice where he cared for patients for over 25 years. During his medical career, he served as chairman of the Department of Surgery at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Ross was also an active member of his community. He was chairman of the Building and Properties Committee of the YMCA when it was under construction and later served as board chairman and as a member of the Board of Trustees.
Ross was also chairman, vice chairman, and board member of the WATCH Health Committee, providing primary and acute health care to the uninsured of Wayne County, N.C. He served as president of the area Rotary club and was awarded Rotarian of the Year.
Ross loved his church, St. Paul United Methodist. He was chairman of the Staff Parish Relations Committee at St. Paul. He was passionate about the ZOE Ministry Project at St. Paul which works to empower impoverished orphans by teaching them trades and growing their faith. Together with his wife, Nancy, Ross sponsored a ZOE working group in Kenya.
Ross loved his family and friends. He was known for his dry, witty humor. He enjoyed sports, especially tennis, and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, the New York Giants, and UNC athletics.
Ross reaffirmed his faith during a trip to the Holy Land earlier this year. The highlight of the trip was his baptism in the Jordan River, performed by his close friend and pastor, Jim Harry.
Ross is survived by his dear wife of almost 30 years, Nancy Ruth Pike Wilson. He is also survived by his brother, John B. Wilson and John’s wife, Kittie, of New London, N.H.; father-in-law J.D. Pike Jr. of Goldsboro; his children: Stacey Wilson and her husband, Rob Williamson, of Portland, Ore., Eric Wilson of New York City, Ross Wilson of New York City, and David Wilson of Boston, Mass.; as well as two grandchildren, Emily and Tyler Williamson.
Following a private inurnment at the columbarium, there will be a celebration of life conducted by the Rev. Jim Harry at St. Paul United Methodist Church, at 204 E. Chestnut St. in Goldsboro on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m. Visitation will follow at the Wilson residence, at 901 Mill Road in Goldsboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Endowment Fund or the ZOE Ministry Project at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, are most welcome.
