David Van Smith, 90, resident of the Pricetown community of Seven Springs, passed away early Friday morning, Aug. 5, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
A service of remembrance will be held Sunday, Aug. 7, at 4 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with visitation following.
At other times, the family will be receiving friends at the Smith residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zion Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Mrs. Larry Williams, 360 Pineview Cemetery Road, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365; Pineview Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, c/o Frazier Hardy, 2078 Zion Church Road, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365; or another charity of one’s choosing.
Mr. Smith was a retired farmer, having raised tobacco, swine, cattle, poultry and grain. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, and was a veteran of the United States Navy.
He will be remembered as being a kindhearted Southern gentleman, who was always ready for a good game of horseshoes.
He is survived by a daughter, Diane Smith Thomas of Seven Springs, and her special friend, Les Casey of Grantham; a son, Brian Smith of Seven Springs; four grandchildren, Kari Herring Williams and husband, Mike, Brad Herring, Bailey Smith and Tanner Smith; two great-grandchildren, David Van Williams and Emily Hope Williams; a sister, Mattie Lee Smith Hamm of Kinston; a brother-in-law, Kivett Ivey of LaGrange; two sisters-in-law, Jeanne Gibbs of Coats and Jackie Myers of Oak Ridge, N.C.; a special friend, Royce Shivar; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins; and his multitude of horseshoe-playing friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hope Price Smith; a son, Gary Smith; his parents, Vann and Daisy Wells Smith; a sister, Lucille Smith Ivey; and two brothers, Horace Smith and Chester Smith.
