MAGGIE GURLEY SMITH

Maggie Rebecca Gurley Smith, 77, passed away on Saturday, July 9, at Goldsboro Assisted Living, surrounded by her family. Maggie was born in Wayne County on April 8, 1939, to the late Leland R. and Ruth Ingram Gurley. Her husband of 46 years, Devid Allen Smith preceded her in death on May 30, 2013.

Maggie set a great example for her family, she was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother and a firm believer in her Lord Jesus Christ. She loved flowers and enjoyed tending to her garden, especially her tomato plants. Maggie loved nothing more than caring for her family and preparing a good home-cooked meal for them.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 6-7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service celebrating Maggie's life at 7 p.m. in the chapel. The family will also receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Interment will be Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

Maggie is survived by her daughters, Billie Lancaster and husband, Junior of Pikeville, Edlena Norman and friend, Charles Towns of Baton Rouge, La., and Elgie Smith Holmes and husband, Donald of LaGrange; grandchildren, Keith Lancaster and wife, Sheri, Jamie Lee Lancaster and wife, Natalia, Larry Norman, Allen Norman, William Norman and Dallas Cotter; and great-grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Sarah and Maggie. She is also survived by her sisters, Rachel Linton and husband, Linwood and Lynn Glance and husband, Lennie; and brothers, Roy Gurley and wife, Barbara, Shade Gurley and wife, Judy, Raeford Gurley and wife, Helen, and Arthur Gurley.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Marlon Mashea Darden; and brothers, Edward Gurley, Ervin Gurley and Jimmy Gurley.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Goldsboro Assisted Living and Maggie's hospice nurse, Patricia Pate for the excellent care they provided for their mother.
