BRIG.GEN. GLENN NEEDHAM SLOAN

Brigadier Gen. Glenn Needham Sloan, USA (Retired) passed away at Wayne Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with metastatic prostate cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and pastor at the time of his passing.
Glenn was born in Duplin County to the late Needham Alphin and Dorothy Davis Sloan. He graduated from Calypso High School and received his B.S. degree in social studies from the University of the State of New York, Regents College. He enjoyed a long career with Dupont, retiring as an engineering supervisor in 1991 after 39 years. In 1994, he was appointed a magistrate of the District Court of North Carolina in Wayne County and served in that position until retiring 10 years later. He then obtained his Realtor's license and worked with his nephew at Kornegay Realty until his death.
One of the highlights of Glenn's life was his service in the North Carolina Army National Guard. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1953 and retired after 40 years in 1993. His career included command and staff positions at company, battalion, group and brigade levels. In 1981, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and placed in command of the 690th Maintenance Battalion. Under his command, the battalion received many awards, including the Walter T. Kerwin Award for being rated the best trained Army National Guard battalion in the nation. Glenn was promoted to brigadier general in 1988. As a general officer, he served as deputy adjutant general North Carolina Army National Guard and as commanding general of the 30th Heavy Separate Brigade (Mechanized).
Glenn's family was very important to him and he thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings. As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his buddies and flower gardening. He was a chartered member of the Neuse Hunting Club for 36 years. As a faithful servant of God, Glenn was a very active member of Mount Olive Presbyterian Church.
Glenn is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Joyce Kornegay Sloan; his son, Ricky and daughter, Becky; his grandchildren, Rick Sloan (Kristen) and Sarah Sloan Zachary (Chris) and a great-granddaughter, Evie Zachary. Additional survivors include his siblings, Davis Sloan and Mary Sloan Rogers (Bill); brother-in-law, Cecil Kornegay (Betty Lou), sister-in-law, Ellen Williams (David); and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many cherished friends.
Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, N.C. A celebration of Glenn's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at Mount Olive Presbyterian Church in Mount Olive, N.C. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Olive Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 158, Mount Olive, N.C.
