Arlene Goodson Talton, 85, Mount Olive, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Arlene was born Jan. 31, 1930, in Duplin County to Arlie and Catherine Goodson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Hoover Talton, and two sisters, Lucille Scott of Raleigh and Violet Smith of Fuquay-Varina.

She is survived by three children, a daughter, Dr. Kathy Best and husband, Doug, of Mount Olive, and two sons, Dr. Kevin Talton and wife, Lynnette, of Goldsboro and Kenny Talton and wife, Carrie, of Mount Olive.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Casey Best, Jessica Best, Tyler Talton, Brandon Talton, Mitchell Talton, Jack Talton and Mary Emma Talton, and by a sister, Azile Honaker of Raleigh.

Arlene served the town of Mount Olive for 52 years as town clerk and finance officer.

In March of 2011, she was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the state of North Carolina's highest civilian award for public service.

She was known for her unwavering honesty and integrity with a compassion for the people she worked with and the community she served.

She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Mount Olive, where she served on numerous committees and was a loyal member of her Tru-Friendship Sunday school class.

One of her most cherished accomplishments was being a devoted loving mother to her children and grandchildren.

She enjoyed working in her yard, Sunday afternoon drives and visiting with friends on her front porch.

A service to celebrate and honor Arlene's life will be held Friday, Aug. 28, 2015, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Mount Olive.

The service will be followed by a visitation at First Baptist Church Christian Life Center.

A graveside service will be held at Maplewood Cemetery Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, at 10 a.m.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the J. Hoover and Arlene G. Talton Endowment at the University of Mount Olive, 634 Henderson St., Mount Olive, N.C., 28365.
