JAMES M. GODWIN JR.

James M. Godwin Jr., 93, Mount Olive, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015.
Born in Bluefield, W.Va., he was the only son of James M. Godwin Sr. and Sara R. Godwin.
He was a well-loved and respected member of that community and also in Mount Olive, where he and his wife had relocated in 2010.
Mr. Godwin was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Alice Seebert Godwin, and his first-born granddaughter, Sara Godwin Gwathmey.
Survivors include their three children, Ann G. and Jim Gwathmey of Norfolk, Va., Alice G. and the Rev. Steven Wicks of Mount Olive and Dr. Jimbo Godwin and his wife, Sue, of Bluefield, W.Va.
Also left to cherish his memory are six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Godwin was a graduate of the McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.
He served his country as a master sergeant in World War II, and was a longtime member of the Rotary Club in Bluefield and then in Mount Olive.
Among Big Jim's proudest contributions to his God and his fellowman were the many years he served as lay minister at Bluefield's Westminster Chapel, Red Sulphur Springs Presbyterian Church and Bramwell Presbyterian Church. His love and devotion were further demonstrated by his 30-plus years as director of Junior Camp in Fayetteville, W.Va., under the auspices of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
He was also a devoted member of Mount Olive Presbyterian Church.
He received the 2011 Outstanding Senior Citizen Award in Mount Olive. His other contributions, connections and relationships are far too numerous to name.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of James M. Godwin Jr. will be held at Mount Olive Presbyterian Church Saturday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Steven Wicks officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church.
