HORACE HOOD

William Horace Hood, 95, passed away early this morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Horace was born Feb. 10, 1919, on the family farm in the Grantham township of Wayne County, N.C., to the late Grover and Emma Rose Hood.

He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Edna Parker Hood; three sons, Philip (Fran), Ted (Doris) and Mark (Joyce) Hood, a daughter, Elaine Hartley (Dennis) of Raleigh; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, James (Maggie), Jean and Manfred (Delores) Hood; and a sister, Ruth Alice Bennett.

Mr. Hood was preceded in death by a grandson, Kent Hood; a great-grandson, Matthew Hood; three brothers, Durwood, Gordon and Joe Dan Hood; and two sisters, Agnes H. Harrell and Elizabeth H. Smith.

He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in Germany and France.

After the war, he came home and farmed.

In 1953, he worked with the Wayne County Sheriff's Department.

In 1955, he became Wayne County's first animal control officer, and retired in 1983 after 30 years of service to Wayne County.

He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was known throughout the United States and Canada for his quality black and tan coon hounds and Warfield red beagles.

He was a member of Selah Christian Church, and funeral services will be held there Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, at 3 p.m., with visitation beginning at 2 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Burial will follow at Falling Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.

At other times, the family will receive friends at the home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Selah Christian Church, c/o Jean Hollowell, 3304 Stevens Mill Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
