Horace L. Carawan, 83, Newport, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Crystal Bluffs.
Receiving of friends will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Munden Funeral Home.
Horace served in the United States Navy, was the owner and operator of Electric Sales and Services of Goldsboro and later ran Beachside Appliance Service in Atlantic Beach.
He never met a stranger, and was a friend to everyone he came in contact with.
He loved being outdoors and tinkering in the yard, and was the master of improvising.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judy Carawan of the home; three children, Terrie Reich of Durham, Christy Hewlett and husband, Tim, of Winston-Salem and Mike Carawan and wife, Lynn, of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren, Dan Carawan, Domenica Bramble, Carolyn Mitchell and husband, Nik, Faith Hewlett and Carson Hewlett; three great-granddaughters, Emmy and Maura Mitchell and Scarlett Carrillo; a sister, Frances Edwards of Simpson, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Mattie Carawan; three sisters; and a brother.
