SNOW HILL -- James Wright Herring, 82, passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, with his family at his side.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Eden Christian Church in Snow Hill, with the Rev. Greg Persinger officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
A private burial is planned.
Jimmie was born in the Herring homeplace in the Shine community of Greene County. He grew up in a large family on land that had been carefully cultivated and passed down by generations before him.
His upbringing taught him to respect his fellow man, treat animals with great kindness and carry on the legacy of what it means to be a farmer.
After attending college at North Carolina State, Jimmie joined the United States Army, and served in Germany.
Upon his return to Greene County, he married Margaret Henderson, and they had two daughters.
He loved his family and his farm, and continuously changed and grew his business to provide for his family until his retirement.
He was an avid reader and North Carolina State University fan, and served his community in a number of capacities.
He is survived by his daughters, Kathy Herring and husband, Doug Gomes, and Holly Herring Odum and husband, Robert Odum, and grandchildren, Alexander, Caroline and Zachary Hammond.
He is survived by two sisters and their children, Faye Carawan and Joyce LaMotte, and his devoted companion, Julia Harper.
The family also wishes to recognize the outstanding contributions the Spring Arbor Assisted Living staff made to Jimmie's quality of life in his final years.

Arrangements are by Wilkerson Funeral Home and Crematory in Greenville.
