WILSON -- L. Carlton Smith, Wilson, passed away Sept. 8, 2013, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
Carlton was born in Wayne County Nov. 28, 1932, to the late Luby A. and Bessie Westbrook Smith.
He retired from BB&T in Wilson after a long and successful career.
Carlton was active in local politics, and formerly served as mayor pro-tem of Elm City.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Frances Hardee Smith; his brother, Marvin Smith; his sister, Dorothy Howell; and his grandson, Cameron Register.
Carlton is survived by his daughter, Dana Smith Sceeny and husband, Martin, of Beaufort; son, Wes Smith and wife, Connie, of Raleigh; grandson Daniel "Art" Register of Raleigh; granddaughter, Emily Smith of Raleigh; and sister, Lois Parks of Goldsboro.
Funeral will be Thursday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Eric Vernelson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
