VIRGINIA JONES SANDERSON

July 20, 1937-Sept. 8, 2013

MOUNT OLIVE -- Virginia Lee Jones Sanderson, 76, Mount Olive, went into the loving arms of her Lord and savior Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013.

Virginia was born at home July 20, 1937, in the small town of Roseboro in Sampson County.

She met and married James Sanderson Jr. of Lenoir County, and had two daughters.

They would move their small family north to Maryland and then on to New Jersey.

She worked as a hostess at Ceres Restaurant, and was a record clerk at IBEW and accounting clerk at Spencer Gifts (and from here she retired) and was a secretary at Pineland Regional High School.

After her husband retired, they moved back to North Carolina -- to Mount Olive -- where she became a member of Mount Olive First Baptist Church, the Marjorie Garris Mission Group and the Women's Bible Study Group.

Virginia was also a member of Woodmen of the World, and held positions of trustee from 2005 to 2007, vice president in 2008 and treasurer from 2009 to 2013.

Not being the type to sit idle, she worked at H and R Block as a receptionist, and became a volunteer for Community Health Care and Hospice.

Her love for education and reading led her to volunteer for the Read to Succeed program in Mount Olive.

In addition to her social activities, she loved to paint, do arts and crafts, sew, work on family genealogy, cook and listen to classical and Christian music.

Virginia will be remembered for her love of life and God, her positive attitude and warm, generous spirit. She had a heart of gold, and always chose to see the best in everyone and in every circumstance.

To her family, she gave freely of herself, providing endless love, support and encouragement. Her greatest joys came from her faith, family and friends. She lived her life with honesty, grace, dignity and an inner calm and peace.

Left to honor and cherish her memory are daughters, Elizabeth A. Goodwin (Michael) of Mount Olive and Angela A. Chappell (John) of Norfolk, Va.; sisters, Christine C. Norris and Peggy J. Graham (George) of Pikeville and Linda Taylor of Deep Run; brother, William C. Jones (Linda) of Elizabethtown; grandchildren, Lisa Romeo, Tina Antonelli, Michael Mott, John Chappell III and Ashleigh Chappell; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James Sanderson Jr.; her parents, William Herman Jones and Susan Rouse Jones; a sister, Barbara A. Jones; and a brother, Stephen R. Taylor.

A celebration of her homegoing will be held at Tyndall Funeral Home Thursday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. Dr. Dennis Atwood will be officiating, and interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery of Mount Olive.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home during the hour before the service.

The family would like to extend thanks and gratitude to Dr. Samer Kasbari, the staff of SMOC and the nurses and assistants at Wayne Memorial Hospital and Kitty Askins Hospice Center for their kind and compassionate care.

The family also wishes to acknowledge all the prayers and support from her church family, friends and neighbors during her journey.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in her memory to Southeastern Cancer Care Center, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

A Tyndall service.
