GLENN ATHALGUS SMITH

PIKEVILLE -- Coach Glenn Athalgus Smith, 88, 103 Collingwood Drive, a well-known Little League Baseball coach in the Belfast community for almost 20 years, passed away early Wednesday morning.
He enjoyed all sports, but baseball was his passion. He leaves as his legacy the many fine young men who had the opportunity to play for him.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home, 1500 Wayne Memorial Drive in Goldsboro. Interment will follow at Davis Family Cemetery in Fremont.
Mr. Smith was born in Wilson County Jan. 20, 1924, to the late John Thomas and Susan Clyde Hooks Smith.
He was a retired tobacco farmer.
Mr. Smith served his country during World War II in the United States Army, receiving several decorations for valor.
Mr. Smith was a member of St. Joseph United Methodist Church in Pikeville and a member of Home Masonic Lodge in Fremont.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Katherine Davis Smith; his two children, Jennifer Hooks and husband, Jake, of Wilmington and Alan Smith and wife, Pam, of Goldsboro; six grandchildren, Sergeant First Class Adam Hooks (United States Army) and wife, Kathy, of Baker, Fla., Kevin Hooks of Raleigh, Sharon Hooks of Jacksonville, Fla., Aaren Smith Brumley and husband, Wayne, of LaGrange, Blake Smith of Goldsboro and Sawyer Smith (his baseball player) of Goldsboro; and four great-grandchildren, Amylynn Hooks, Addison Hooks and Aiden Hooks all of Florida and Layla Brumley of LaGrange.
He is also survived by his sisters, Dorothy Smith Tait of Wilson and Carol Smith Kingsbury and husband, Philip, of Florence, S.C.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl Smith, Gordon Smith and Maxton Smith, and his sister, Eleanor Smith.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, Jan. 18, 2013, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro and other times at the home.
