WILLIAM "BILLY" BEST

MOUNT OLIVE -- William Allen Best, 74, known to all as Billy, Northeast Church community near Mount Olive, passed away suddenly Tuesday evening, Nov. 13, 2012.
He was a longtime loyal member of Northeast Original Free Will Baptist Church, where he was the "official" church greeter. Too, he gave of his time and talents to many workings within the church, serving as deacon and church trustee, youth leader, Sunday school teacher and his involvement with the men's fellowship.
The son of the late Roscoe and Carrie Ola Peele Best, he enjoyed a long working career with the Les Anderson family, beginning with Anderson Roofing and Sheet Metal Works under the tutelage of Mr. Leslie, which later evolved into Anderson Heating and Cooling, then operated by Doug Anderson and Tim Creech, and from which he retired after a 50-year tenure of faithful and loyal service.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Merdie Ruth Best of the home; a son, William Allen "Bill" Best Jr. and wife, Carrie, of Mount Olive; four daughters, Sue Turner and husband, Dennis, Jan King and husband, Steve, and Renee Pope and husband, Randy, all of Mount Olive and Linda Cook and husband, Andy, of Kentucky; his grandchildren, Wendy Dickerson and husband, Neil, Carla Padgett and husband, Kevin, Jennifer Galvez and husband, Oscar, Matt Davenport and wife, Amanda, William Best III and fiancee', Chelsy Lee, Andrew Best and wife, Hailey, Christopher Best, Frank King and wife, Cathy, Ashley King and fiancee', Brucean McIntire, Randy Pope, Darren Pope, Justin Best and fiancee, Samantha, Daniel Ruggles, David Cook, Danny Cook, David King and wife, Jenny, and Christine Sellars and husband, Rob; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bobby Best and wife, Cecile, and Ronnie Best all of Mount Olive; sisters, LaRoyce B. Oates of Faison, Duck B. Macon and husband, Charles, of Raleigh and Jeanie B. Merritt and husband, Jimmy, of Mount Olive; several nieces and nephews; and his church family at Northeast, who loved and admired him very much.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Tyndall Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Richard Cuddington and the Rev. Mickey Whitfield, and followed by visitation. The burial will be Friday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.
