VELMA "LEONE" SYKES

Velma "Leone" Bell Sykes, 91, formerly of Goldsboro, died Thursday at Duke Homecare and Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Monday at noon at First Christian Church with the family receiving friends from 11 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. at the church. The Rev. Dr. Fred Clarke will be officiating. Graveside services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount.
She was born in Washington County to the late William M. and Delsie Alexander Bell and was married to the late Malcolm Sykes.
Leone graduated from the Metropolitan School of Nursing, New York in 1942 and served as a civil service nurse at Fort Devens and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base until her retirement in 1980.
Throughout their lives she and Malcolm were active members of First Christian Church of Goldsboro. She served as an elder at First Christian Church, was past president of Church Women United - Goldsboro Unit, past president of Christian Women Fellowship, member of the choir, and past vice-president and treasurer of Wayne County AARP.
She is survived by two daughters, Joan "Mazzelle" Wisoff, (husband, Eugene) of New York and Carol Ann Riggs, (husband, Phillip) of Durham; and a grandchild, Doralyn Leone Wisoff.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Memorial Fund of First Christian Church.
