ANNIE RUTH EDGERTON JOHNSON
July 29, 1920-Nov. 29, 2011
Annie Ruth Edgerton Johnson, a longtime resident of Goldsboro, died at the age of 91 on Nov. 29, 2011, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice in Winston-Salem.
Annie Ruth loved welcoming her family and friends into her home with beautiful flowers, great food and late night conversations around the table. Creating wonderful flower arrangements and planning, organizing and hosting events came easy to her. She owned and operated Annie Ruth's Beauty Shop in Goldsboro, where she truly enjoyed her time with everyone who entered. She actively participated and served in leadership roles within Goldsboro Friends Meeting (Quaker church), the Belfast Grange and the Wayne County Extension Homemakers organization.
Annie Ruth was born in Wayne County on July 29, 1920, to the late David Earl Edgerton and Inez Sutton Edgerton. She is survived by her daughters, Sara Mercer Nutter and husband, Stan, of Winston-Salem and Geraldine "Geri" Mercer Brasile and husband, Ted, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; her grandchildren, Andrew Joseph Brasile and Anna Elizabeth Brasile; her stepchildren, David Johnson and wife, Maxine, of Greensboro, Ashton Medina and husband, George, of Raleigh, Tom Johnson of Greenville and Rita Sheriden and husband, Joseph, of Barrington, Ill.; her stepgrandchildren, Eric Johnson (Lauren), Michael Medina (Catherine), Tom Johnson, Jr. (Sharon), David C. Johnson (Mary Anne), Stephen Johnson, and Nancy Johnson (Courtney Olmstead), Erin S Fitzwilliam (Steve), Gavin Sheridan (Erin); and 14 stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Gerald Mercer and David Aaron Johnson; her sisters, Elizabeth Edgerton, Lillian Lewis and Lorena Therkildsen; her brothers, Herbert Edgerton, Harold Edgerton, Ralph Edgerton and Alvin Edgerton; and her stepgranddaughter, Shirley Ashton Medina.
The family will receive friends on Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. in the chapel with James Cavanaugh officiating.
Annie Ruth loved arranging flowers from her garden and the gardens of family and friends. She believed that flowers should be shared with the living, so in lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Goldsboro Friends Meeting (P.O. Box 1934, Goldsboro, NC 27533), Winston-Salem Friends Meeting (3151 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106) or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home (101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103).
