JOHN M. HINTON JR.

Lt. Colonel (Retired) John M. Hinton, Jr., 81, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at New Bern National Cemetery in New Bern. There will be no set family visitation but Mr. Hinton's body will lay in state at Shumate Faulk Funeral Home in Goldsboro, Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Mr. Hinton was born on August 28, 1930 in Goldsboro. In 1951, he went into the U.S. Air Force, becoming an officer in 1952. His career with the Air Force took him to Alaska, Iceland, Germany and as a diplomat to NATO in Brussels, Belgium. After 20 years of distinguished service, he retired in Kinston, N.C.
In Kinston, he was active in the Kiwanis, Fairfield Duplicate Bridge Club, where he served as secretary for 8 years. He served on Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Vernon Park Mall Merchants Association Board of Directors, including one year as president. He enjoyed sports, bridge and his stamp collection.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Jean Hinton. Surviving are his son, John M. Hinton, III of Charlotte, two daughters, Vickee Murray of Charlotte, Lisa Hinton of Louisburg, N.C., four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
