JOYCE MARIE HOWELL WOERNER

April 17, 1942-June 19, 2011

Joyce Marie Howell Woerner, 69, died early Sunday morning at her Rosewood home after a lengthy battle with Leukemia.

Born in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Ruth Horne Howell.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Goldsboro.

Joyce made her home in New York with her husband of 53 years. She eventually retired in Goldsboro following a career, which spanned more than 50 years as a book keeper, at which time she pursued several hobbies such as gardening, continuing extensive genealogy research and crocheting items to give to family and friends.

She and her husband also enjoyed "cruising" around the country in their custom rebuilt 1951 Ford street rod pickup.

Joyce will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Norman "Butch" Woerner, and three children, Lorrie Woerner-Hodge (Virgil) of Valparaiso, Ind., Norman Woerner Jr. of Goldsboro, N.C., and Norma Marullo of Rochester, N.Y.

She had seven grandchildren, Tommy, Tracy, Jessica, Zack, Dallas, Tyler and Grace; two great-grandchildren, Asantae and Julius; a sister, Annette Mitchell of Goldsboro; and a sister-in-law, Norma Kelley (Mike) of Milton, Fla.

Joyce also treasured several close friendships with nearby neighbors as well as friends in New York.

A Christian Mass will be held Friday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Family members will greet friends at the church immediately following the service.

The family is being served by Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home of Goldsboro, and online condolences may be directed to www.shumate-faulk.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, Mass., 01202.
