LAGRANGE -- Dorothy Mozingo Garris Whitehurst, 90, Beston community, passed away Monday, Nov. 8, 2010.
Dorothy was born Nov. 19, 1919, in Wayne County to the late Bennie Henry Mozingo and Mary Vivian Carter Mozingo.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Emmett Preston Garris; daughter, Mary Amy Garris Cooley; and a grandson, Preston Duane Garris.
A woman of strong Christian values, Dorothy attended Garris Chapel United Methodist Church as a child, and for the past 74 years has been a member of Beston United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school for many years and had served on the church board.
Dorothy had been an active member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, where she had served as a chapter, district and state commander.
She was a charter member and former president of the New Hope Extension Homemakers Club.
A service of remembrance will be held Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at 7 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sherman Guthrie officiating. Interment will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 40 years, the Rev. Virgil Whitehurst; son, Preston Franklin Garris of LaGrange; three grandchildren, Joel Franklin Garris, Brendan Joseph Garris and Leslye Lea Cooley; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Garris, Bethany Garris, Natalie Noel Garris and Joel Franklin Garris II; stepdaughter, Carol Lynn Whitehurst of Fuquay-Varina; sister, Virginia Lindsey of Goldsboro; brother, Ben F. Mozingo of Goldsboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Tuesday following the service, and at other times they will be at the home.
