Mr. Pate, known by all as "Robie," was born Aug. 19, 1927, at Pate's Mill Pond to Lorenzo and Mary Daniels Pate.
Prior to the early 1990s when bilateral hip replacements forced retirement, he had been a lifelong Duplin County farmer.
One who never knew a stranger, he possessed a natural love for all things and for all people, was especially fond of animals and was an avid baseball fan.
He is survived by his wife, Betty "Bill" Pate of the home; four grandsons, Junior Coats and his wife, Sheila, of Faison, Jeff Coats and his wife, Rose, of Faison and Anthony Patterson and Craig Patterson both of Broadway; three sisters, Jewel Paige and husband, Bennie, Marilyn Roberts and husband, B.C., and Kathy Jones and husband, Brian, all of Faison; a brother, J. D. Pate and his wife, Marty Ann, of Faison; an aunt, Lucille Daniels Byrd of Mount Olive; and several nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
Family members who have preceded him in death include his parents, Lorenzo and Mary Daniels Pate; his stepmother, Thelma Winders Pate; a daughter, Catherine Coats Patterson; a grandson, Douglas Allen Coats; and a sister, Carolyn Pate Odom.
This humble man will be remembered as many things by many people -- husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle or friend -- and in the hearts of all who knew him, he will always be "Robie."
A Tyndall service.
