CHUBBY BRIDGERS

Brutus Stallings "Chubby" Bridgers, 83, passed away Wednesday at Wake Medical Center.
A service to remember Chubby will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James Harry and the Rev. Beth Grice officiating. A private interment for the family will be at Willow Dale Cemetery.
Chubby was born in Wayne County Feb. 28, 1927, to the late John Kennedy Bridgers and Katherine Metz Bridgers.
He was a graduate of Goldsboro High School and attended Duke University on a football scholarship.
Mr. Bridgers and his wife founded the Cloth Barn in 1956.
Chubby served the city of Goldsboro as an alderman and was a retired building contractor in Goldsboro. He was a dealer of world champion horses and enjoyed restoring old cars. His car business was known as Chub's Classic Cars.
He served his country during World War II in the United States Marine Corps.
Chubby is survived by his wife, Lillian Overman Bridgers; his children, Lee Stevens Bridgers and wife, Miki, of Moab, Utah, Dale Metz Bridgers and wife, Kathy, of Goldsboro, Catherine Bridgers Byrd and husband, Gene Turner Byrd, of Goldsboro and John Montague Bridgers and wife, Elizabeth Underwood Bridgers, of Goldsboro; his sister, Kitzi Bridgers Moore and husband, Dover Gladstone Moore, Nancy Bridgers Norwood and husband, Charles Stephens Norwood, and Barbara Bridgers Garey and husband George Garey; his brother, Walter Thomas Bridgers and wife, Julie Talton Bridgers; eight grandchildren, Mystery Bridgers and husband, Stephan Ziegler, Johnathan Byrd, Thomas Byrd and wife, Amber, Catherine Byrd Tewes and husband, Travis, Vincent Bridgers and wife, Lauren, Mimi Bridgers, John Bridgers and Matthew Bridgers; two great-grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Tewes and Lillian Collette Byrd; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
The family will receive friends Saturday following the service in the parlor of St. Paul United Methodist Church and other times at his home.
